Turfgrass Selection for Texas Sod Installations

In order for a sod installation to be successful, many factors are evaluated.  First, we will need to select which adapted grass species (or a variety of that species) will do well in a specific area based on the climate and conditions of the installation site.

Climate and condition factors include:

• Shade or sun
• Soil depth and quality
• Intended use (lawn, golf course, athletic field)
• Amount of traffic
• Amount of rainfall or irrigation
• Level of maintenance

Texas Warm-Season Grasses:

Warm-season grasses turn straw-colored at the first frost and may go dormant during the winter in Texas.  These grasses will green up again each Spring and continue the cycle.

Texas Warm Season Grasses that do well in our area include:

  • St. Augustine – St. Augustine grass has broad, wide blades and is less drought tolerant than Bermuda or Zoysia. It can be grown in Central and West Texas with more supplemental irrigation. St. Augustine does not tolerate high traffic. Shade tolerant varieties are available.
  • Bermuda – Bermuda grass is grown throughout Texas. It is very tolerant of drought and traffic and requires full sunlight.
  • Zoysia – Zoysia grass has light to moderate shade tolerance, depending on the variety. Zoysia does well on lawns and in recreational areas with only moderate traffic.  It has a much finer leaf texture that produces a very dense turf more like a carpet.

New sod installations require proper irrigation. If you need irrigation work, Grass Works also offers Sprinkler/Irrigation Repair & Installations.
