When to Winterize in Central Texas

The trigger isn’t a date on the calendar — it’s the forecast. Once nighttime temperatures start dropping below 32°F consistently, usually sometime in late November or December here, it’s time. I tell people to get the protective steps done early in the fall so you’re not scrambling the night before a freeze warning, and then to keep an eye on hard-freeze events through January and February, which are historically our coldest and most dangerous.

The other half of timing is your controller. Put it in “rain” or “off” mode before the first freeze so the system isn’t running and coating everything in ice on a cold night. There’s no reason for it to water in winter anyway — dormant grass doesn’t need it.

What’s Actually at Risk

The single most vulnerable part of an Austin irrigation system is the backflow preventer — that brass assembly sticking up out of the ground near your main connection. It’s above ground, full of water, and exposed to the air, which makes it the first thing to freeze and crack. Right behind it are any exposed above-ground pipes and, in a hard freeze, the pipes and heads in the shallowest parts of your yard.

At a minimum, every homeowner should wrap the backflow preventer and any exposed piping with insulation — foam covers, insulation tape, or even towels and a plastic bag in a pinch. This baseline step prevents the most common and most expensive freeze damage we see.

The Blowout Process

For full protection — especially on larger systems, newer installs, or properties that have been bitten before — the right answer is a blowout. This is where you shut off the water supply to the system at the main valve, then use compressed air to push all the remaining water out of the lines and heads zone by zone. Water that isn’t there can’t freeze and expand, which is what cracks pipes in the first place.

A blowout isn’t a DIY job for most people — using too much air pressure can damage heads and fittings, and you need to run it zone by zone to do it right.
